As North America goes through the first decade of the 21st century, bodypainting is emerging in popular culture as a desirable and popular art form. Few people realize that bodypainting is an ancient tradition that goes back beyond 10,000 years, even before mankind's invention of cities. It is part of who we are and reminds us that we are descended from a more primitive era. Reflecting my dual talents, the following images showcase both my body painting ability and my photographic skills.

|Two Skills in One Person
(Bodypainting & Photography)
"Body Painting by Flick" is Part of "Flick Photographic"
It is the same person with two unique talents. My acquaintances sometimes ask how an urban planner, photographer, geographer, and world traveler, ever got into bodypainting. Here's a long story made short: I have been bodypainting for over a decade, even when I lived in North Carolina. At first it was just another source of artistic expression and an occasional hobby. I'd always painted and illustrated, and was always open to many venues for my artistic expression. I have a comfortable demeanor, so my friends would encourage me during gatherings to create these unique works of art. Since bodypaintings only last hours, my skilled photographic talents came into play. It has always been a dual challenge: paint a design that "pops", then photograph it in such a way that it's captured forever in "show-stopping" pictures.
Hiring both "Body Painting by Flick" and "Flick Photographic" for Your Event
Bodypainting has worked itself into mainstream American culture. You may not have realized that body painting has been a part of western European (expecially German and Austrian) life for many years. The World Olympics of Body Painting is held annually in Austria. In the United States, bodypainting has graduated from being a private and rare endeavor, to becoming the featured 'performance art' at public events. A tamer offshoot is the children-friendly face paintings at birthday parties, bar mitzvahs, and festivals.
American bodypainting at public events usually does not involve nudity. Bikinis can be painted too. Typically, models may wear g-strings and small adhesive pasties on breasts to ensure that local standards are observed.
Paint is applied by both air brush and individual brushes. Because of the ease of airbrushing, works of art can be accomplished in record time. Paints are water based and safe for the skin. Instances where waterproof paint is required, special skin-safe alcohol based paint can be sprayed or brushed on. Amazingly, it will last 24 hours or more and you can sleep in it without harming your sheets. All water based paints can be instantly washed off in the shower. Alcohol based paint is easily removed with isopropyl alcohol. Regardless of paint type, the finished artwork is opaque and akin to a body glove.
The result is that body painting is now used as the centerpiece of promotional events such as Key West's Fantasy Fest, car shows, and hotel conventions. In the case of "Body Painting by Flick" and "Flick Photographic", these two hightly skilled talents are offered by one person, who is both an accomplished artist and professional photographer.

For Those Who Are Interested in Modeling...
Volunteering for Bodypainting
I have never been at a loss for volunteers. I'm repeatedly told that the experience is way too much fun. In fact, at certain times of the year (full moons, maybe?) I sometimes have a waiting list for my creations. This is not a problem. I believe the popularity of bodypainting stems from some very basic primal needs within us as human beings. The process is soothing, collaborative, highly expressive, and my subjects tell me, nurturing. The resulting artwork is a fusion and expression of both the artist and model. Many times my artwork is a reflection of the passions, interests, and personality of my subject. They are one-of-a-kind. Lately, I am focusing my efforts with current events in mind. With the many problems facing our world, this well-source is bottomless. When this particular effort plays itself out, a book of my work will be the result.
Models: Lmited 'TFCD-Trades' for Fashion, Glamour, and Bodypainting
I am currently accepting some test shoot requests (TFCDs/trades), although I am selective. I often receive more requests for TFCD than I can provide. My photographic work is excellent and sought after. Therefore, I must balance TFCD with paid assignments. But it's either feast or famine, so don't let my perceived work load discourage you from asking. I enjoy working with enthusiastic newcomers who may have that certain aura, attitude, or unique look that makes a dramatic image. Model work requests should be related to my photographic resume of work, or my planned book on body painting. To contact me, simply click on "Contact Us" here, or on the link at the top left of this page Please indicate in your introductory message where you learned of me and my work. Including a contact phone number (with best time to call) demonstrates both your professionalism and your ability to be complete in your response.
Models: Paid Assignments
They come regularly. Who do I contact and pay when a client hires me? It needs repeating. I call those volunteering individuals who I've worked with before, usually on a previous TFCD shoot. I hire those models (on behalf of a paying client) with whom I have first established a working relationship. This is also my way of rewarding those who chose to work with me when the gain was quality images for their port. In other words, they believed that the quality of my work had its own value. Networking is everything.
Models: Contact and Introductions
For models who contact me, I may set up an introductory meeting over restaurant coffee. No minors. Bring a friend. I will want to know if you are hiring me for specific work (tear sheets, portfolio, portraits, etc.), or if you are requesting work as trade. For trades, your maturity, ability to take direction well, and ability to work collaboratively with others will be the key for being selected. By going through this process, I hopefully weed out in advance those who are prone to be "no-shows" on the day of the shoot. For those who are just beginning to model, please know that professionalism, courtesy, and commitment are truly the keys to success in this industry.
Models: A Valuable Message About Networking
Never forget the power of networking. So important. By actually talking with photographers, make-up artists, stylists, and other models, you are sowing the seeds for more jobs in the future. The biggest mistake new or unprofessional models make is ignoring inquiries. You are your own ambassador and your actions speak loudly. Making lasting impressions is part of the craft of establishing working relationships and building alliances that result in repeat work assignments. To ignore this is to limit requests for future work. Taking the initiative to call make-up artists, stylists, and photographers is viewed as a positive "networking habit." The Rule to Follow: Networking will make you more money. Waiting for photographers to contact you just means wasted time with little income. Remember that you are in competition with other models. So take the initiative, make the call, and get that paid assignment.
When hiring Body Painting by Flick for your event, two methods exist for figuring costs. The first is an hourly rate. If I am to bring one or more models as part of the demonstration, there will also be an hourly rate for all additional subjects. Don't worry. We have a ready list of models who enjoy this work immensely. We make all arrangements.
An alternative to figuring an hourly rate, is a "piece rate". This is sometimes used when a business wants to use bodypainting as a powerful attractor for customers attending a particular event, but also allows for participation by paying customers. In this case, customers can defray your business cost by either paying for entry or paying for a bodypainting experience themselves. An excellent example is Key West's Fantasy Fest. Many hotels hire their own private bodypainter for the benefit of their paying guests. Depending on your negotiated set up cost, individual customer pricing can be partially or completely subsidized by your business.
If travel is involved, whether to the Caribbean region, the Bahamas, or to points in South Florida, travel and/or lodging costs will be a consideration.
A natural part of body painting is the photography of the finished work. When you contract with Body Painting by Flick, you are hiring a professional photographer (Flick Photographic) who can create great photographs. Talk to us about our dual package of both bodypainting and photography. It's your best value because you get both highly specialized talents with one person.
